Safety Circuit Rider Training

The WV LTAP Center has been recognized as one of four LTAP centers to receive a one-year Safety-Circuit Rider grant from the FHWA. This grant hopes to help solve some of the safety issues on local roads. The grant is intended to help fund programs for technical assistance on rural road safety.

GOALS OF THE PROGRAM

The goals of this program to be reached by 2007 are:

  • Reduce Roadway Departure fatalities by 10%
  • Reduce intersection fatalities by 10%
  • Reduce pedestrian fatalities by 10%

This is accomplished in a couple of ways

1. The building of safer roads

2. The implementation of appropriate countermeasures for existing hazardous locations

Hands-on training will be offered on a number of different topics, including(but not limited to):

  • Road safety audits
  • Roadside Safety
  • Intersection Safety
  • Walkable Communities
  • Signs and Markings
  • Engineering for Safety
  • And many more...

Some of the areas of technical assistance will include:

  • Conducting Road Safety Audits
  • On-site visits to areas of concern
  • Identifying high risk locations
  • Prioritizing needed improvements
  • As well as others

Funding

Through our work with private industry, we hope to establish the Signing and Marking Grant Program. This program will allow local agencies to purchase these materials at a fraction of their normal cost.

To evaluate the success of the program, WV LTAP will be filing an annual report to the FHWA outlining what has taken place in terms of improvements and adjustments, an evaluation of what has happened as a result of the adjustments, as well as other pertinent information to determine the usage of the grant.

You can become involved or get more infomation by contacting Dr. Ronald Eck with suggestions or questions. We all look forward to working with you to make our roadways safer.
